Two people died on Monday, December 29, after a vehicle in the convoy of Nigerian-British boxer, Anthony Joshua collided with a truck along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway in Ogun state.
The crash occurred around 11:00 am near the Makun area, close to the Sagamu interchange on the Ibadan-bound lane of the highway.
Witnesses said a Lexus SUV conveying Joshua rammed into a stationary truck under circumstances that are still being investigated.
The vehicle was said to be part of a two-car convoy, with Joshua seated in the rear of the Lexus, while his security detail followed in another SUV.
An eyewitness said the impact was severe, killing two passengers instantly.
“The passenger beside the driver and the person sitting next to Joshua died on the spot.
“Other road users and I tried to help before officials arrived,” the eyewitness said.
Confirming the development, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) spokesperson in Ogun state, Afolabi Odunsi, stated that five persons were involved in the collision.
While two occupants died at the scene, others sustained injuries of varying degrees.
Joshua also sustained minor injuries and was rescued alive from the wreckage.
FRSC officials later arrived at the scene, cordoned off the area, and commenced rescue and recovery operations.
