The Ogun State Government has disclosed that two people who lost their lives in the road accident involving world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua were foreigners.
The fatal crash happened on Monday, less than an hour before noon, along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.
According to official information, the accident occurred near the Danco Filling Station in Makun, shortly before the Sagamu Interchange on the Ibadan-bound lane. The Lexus Jeep conveying Joshua, bearing registration number KRD 850 HN, it was learned, ran into a stationary truck at the location.
In a statement released on Monday by the Special Adviser to the Ogun State Governor on Information and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, the state government conveyed its sympathy to the families, friends, and associates of those who died in the incident.
Giving further clarification, Akinmade said, “The fatal accident occurred along the busy Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, within the Makun axis of Ogun State, and sadly claimed the lives of two persons.
“Anthony Joshua and three other individuals were reportedly travelling from Lagos to Sagamu at the time of the incident.
“Preliminary reports indicate that two male foreign nationals died on the spot. Their remains have since been deposited at the Livewell Morgue in Sagamu.”
The statement also revealed that Joshua and the vehicle’s driver were promptly rescued by security operatives attached to his convoy and rushed to a hospital, where they are currently undergoing treatment.
It added that “The sport utility vehicle conveying the occupants was said to have rammed into a stationary truck along the expressway.
“While the severely damaged vehicle has been evacuated to the Sagamu Motor Traffic Division, MTD, office, efforts are ongoing to tow the truck involved to the same location to facilitate a comprehensive investigation.”
Describing the accident as deeply distressing, the Ogun State Government noted that the loss of life was painful, while other occupants sustained different levels of injuries and are receiving medical attention.
The government further appealed to motorists to drive carefully and adhere strictly to traffic rules, especially during the festive period when roads are usually busier. It also urged road safety officials and security agencies to strengthen monitoring and enforcement across the state.
“Our hearts go out to the bereaved families who lost their loved ones in this tragic incident,” the statement concluded, while offering prayers for the departed and a quick recovery for those injured.
