A serious road accident involving multiple vehicles claimed at least two lives and injured several others on Saturday, January 17, at Kara Bridge inward Mowe along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, confirmed that the crash occurred in the afternoon after a fully loaded long truck overturned and rammed into other vehicles on the busy corridor.
The affected vehicles included a Toyota Corolla, a Toyota RAV4 SUV with Lagos plate number LSR-618-HS, and two loaded interstate Mazda buses bearing plates APP-835-XY and JJJ-538-YE, both registered in Lagos.
LASTMA officials, operating under the code name PAPA OSCAR, were immediately deployed to the scene to control traffic and coordinate rescue efforts. Tow trucks were also mobilised to remove the damaged vehicles and restore movement on the expressway.
According to the agency, those injured in the crash were swiftly taken to nearby medical facilities for treatment, while recovery and clearance operations were still ongoing as of the time of the update.
“Multiple vehicle crash involving a truck that fell on its side, a Corolla, an SUV (RAV4), and two loaded interstate Mazda buses has been reported on Kara Bridge inwards Mowe,” the statement reads.
“Two fatalities were recorded, and several people were injured. All injured persons have been rushed to the hospital for treatment.
“Recovery operations are still in progress. The resulting traffic backlog has extended back to the Secretariat area and also to River Valley/Kosoko.”
Motorists have been cautioned by LASTMA to steer clear of the Ojodu-Berger axis or prepare for heavy traffic congestion due to the spillover from the accident scene.
