The University of Abuja on Sunday, Febuary 22, approved the expulsion of 28 students for various disciplinary offences, including alleged examination malpractice, cultism and result falsification.
The decision was taken at the institution’s senate meeting, according to a statement issued by Habib Yakoob, acting director of information.
Yakoob said the expulsion followed the consideration of the report and recommendations of the Student Disciplinary Committee (SDC).
He listed the offences committed by the affected students to include alleged threat to life and assault, conspiracy, burglary, theft, cult-related activities, possession and use of hard drugs.
He said the expelled students were also accused of falsifying results from the National Examinations Council (NECO) and the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) uploaded to the university portal for admission, as well as failing to appear before the disciplinary committee despite repeated invitations.
According to the statement, the senate approved the withdrawal of certificates of 15 former students who failed to honour invitations by the committee despite several notices.
The senate exonerated nine students after investigations, and warned 33 other students over various infractions, including conspiracy, hostel racketeering and fighting.
Hakeem Fawehinmi, the vice-chancellor, reaffirmed the university’s commitment to maintaining a safe and conducive learning environment.
He said the institution would continue to uphold discipline and enforce its rules and regulations without compromise, stressing that academic integrity remains sacrosanct.
Fawehinmi commended the SDC for its thorough handling of the cases and urged students to conduct themselves responsibly to avoid actions that could jeopardise their academic pursuits.
