Five persons have lost their lives, while seven others sustained injuries following a fatal road crash along the Lokoja–Abuja highway.
The Kogi State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, confirmed the incident, blaming it on dangerous overtaking by one of the drivers involved.
A statement from the FRSC office in Lokoja said the accident happened on Tuesday, January 6, and involved 12 occupants, including three children made up of two girls and a boy.
Investigations revealed that the collision occurred between a Toyota Avensis belonging to Omala Local Government and a Sino truck owned by Dangote Cement Plc. Both vehicles, it was gathered, rammed into each other in a head-on crash.
The Toyota Avensis, bearing registration number Kogi BJK172LG, and the truck with registration number BBR719SA, collided with such impact that five occupants died instantly at the scene.
The FRSC added that the seven survivors suffered various injuries ranging from bruises to fractures. They were immediately rushed to Ekpe Hospital in Ganaja and ASCO Hospital in Ajaokuta for medical attention.
Meanwhile, the bodies of the deceased were deposited at the morgue of the Kogi State Specialist Hospital in Lokoja.
The road safety agency reiterated its warning to motorists, urging them to shun speeding and wrongful overtaking to prevent avoidable tragedies on Nigerian highways.
