A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State, Hon. Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, has raised alarm over the deplorable condition of the Ibadan‑Gbongan road, calling it a “death trap.”
Oyintiloye, a member of the defunct Presidential Campaign Council (PCC), spoke with newsmen on Sunday, December 7, in Osogbo, warning that the road linking Oyo, Osun, and Ondo states has become a serious threat to road users.
He cautioned that continued neglect, especially during the festive season when traffic volume is expected to increase, could lead to more accidents.
The former lawmaker appealed to the federal government to urgently intervene before the road collapses entirely.
He noted that the road’s condition has deteriorated to the point that motorists are forced to abandon one lane of the dual carriageway.
“The road is now in such a terrible state that every part is almost impassable, causing untold hardship for motorists,” Oyintiloye said.
“During this festive season, traffic volume will increase, and without emergency repairs, road users may face even greater hardship and insecurity.”
He pointed out that many deep potholes on this vital route, which links Southwest states with other regions of the country, have made travel extremely difficult.
Oyintiloye commended the federal government for its Renewed Hope infrastructure development program but stressed that urgent attention is needed for the safety and well-being of Nigerians.
“Due to the road’s terrible condition, the dual carriageway has effectively been reduced to a single lane, which is dangerous, especially at this period,” he added.
“A good road network is essential for sustaining economic growth, creating jobs, improving commerce, and enhancing the quality of life for Nigerians.”
Oyintiloye further highlighted the broader impact of poor road infrastructure, noting that the deteriorating condition of many roads across the country is a significant strain on the economy.
He said billions of naira are lost annually in reduced productivity and resources, and preventable accidents on poor roads have claimed countless lives while exposing travelers to security risks.
“Despite substantial yearly budgets allocated to road construction and maintenance, the country continues to face gaps in both the quality and quantity of its road infrastructure,” he said.
He urged the federal government to fast-track the rehabilitation and reconstruction of all roads in urgent need of repair, especially as the festive period approaches
