The Headquarters Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), of the Nigerian army has raised alarm over possible attacks by Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) during the upcoming Eid-El-Kabir celebrations across the North-East.

In a statement issued on Monday, May 24, Lt. Col. Sani Uba, disclosed that intelligence reports suggest insurgents may attempt to strike crowded civilian locations during the festive period.

“Credible intelligence available to the Command indicates the possibility of isolated attempts by remnant Boko Haram terrorists (BHT) and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) elements to exploit the festive period to carry out attacks against civilian targets using suicide bombers and IEDs, particularly in areas of high population concentration,” he said.

The military advised residents to observe Eid prayers and celebrations close to their homes and familiar communities while avoiding large gatherings where possible.

Residents were also urged to remain highly vigilant in crowded places such as markets, motor parks, banking halls and prayer grounds.

The theatre command further appealed to the public to immediately report suspicious individuals, unattended items or unusual activities to the nearest security formation.

It also urged citizens to cooperate with security personnel during patrols and screening operations while avoiding unnecessary movement, especially at night or in areas with limited security presence.

The command cautioned against spreading rumours or unverified information capable of causing panic among residents.

Traditional rulers, religious leaders, media organisations and community stakeholders were also encouraged to sensitise members of the public and support the timely sharing of credible security information before and during the celebrations.

“Operation HADIN KAI reassures all residents of the North East that troops are on standby, fully prepared, and firmly in control,” the statement added.
