Senate President, Senator Bukola Saraki is fighting the battle of survival to remain as number three man in the country.
Protesters on Tuesday compounded this survival battle as they stormed the National Assembly, demanding his resignation as the Senate President.
They said Saraki continued overseeing the affairs of the upper Legislative arm was tantamount to a corrupt Judge deciding the fate of criminals. They him to clear his name over his Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) trial before aspiring to lead the Senate again.
Saraki is facing a 13-count charge at the CCT bordering on false assets declaration while he was Governor of Kwara state. The case has been fixed for March 10 for further mention.
The protesters who stormed the entrance of the National Assembly around 10.30 am asked Saraki to resign and concentrate on his trial at the CCT.
Some of the placards carried by the protesters read, “Suspend Saraki not Marafa”, “Leave the Senate and face CCT trial,” and “Democracy survives on inclusiveness not suspension ” among others.
Ude Emeka, who is the convener, said the moves to suspend Senator Kabiru Marafa (APC, Zamfara Central) does not follow the tenet of democracy.
“Rather than suspending Marafa, Saraki should resign and concentrate on his trial at the CCT. We want to show the leadership of the National Assembly that the Nigerian civil society will stand against any move to suspend any Senator because of his or her divergent view, “he said.
