China has revealed it’s intention to engage in trade talks with the United States (US), after President Trump announced that will lower tariffs imposed on China if a trade deal can be reached.
Guo Jiakun, China’s foreign ministry spokesperson revealed this on Wednesday, April 23, stating that the tariffs benefit no one.
Trump had earlier acknowledged that US tariffs on Chinese goods are currently very high, but assured they would be substantially lowered once a trade deal can be reached.
In response to his remarks, Jiakun reiterated China’s stance on the trade wars, stating that the tariffs will not boost the economy of both nations.
He said, “We do not wish to fight, nor are we afraid of fighting. The door for talks is wide open.
“On the one hand that they want to reach an agreement with China, while on the other hand continuing to exert extreme pressure is not the correct way to have dealings with China.”
Since beginning his second term in January, President Trump has intensified a retaliatory trade conflict with Beijing, resulting in US tariffs on various Chinese imports climbing as high as 145%.
The ongoing trade dispute between the world’s two largest economies has unsettled global markets and sparked concerns about a potential worldwide recession.
