EFCC arrest 3 men in Borno for naira mutilation

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Thursday, February 12, arrested three men in Maiduguri, Borno state, for naira mutilation.

The suspects, identified as Adam Muhammad, Muhammad Muhammad, and Bashir Musa, were apprehended after a video surfaced online showing them using ₦500 notes to clean mucus from their noses.

This act constitutes a criminal offence under section 21 of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) act 2007, which prohibits the abuse, spraying, or mutilation of the national currency.

The footage, which circulated widely on social media, prompted swift action from the anti-graft agency.

Operatives from the Maiduguri zonal directorate tracked the individuals within the city and effected their arrest.

The commission confirmed that the suspects are currently being held at the Maiduguri detention facility while investigations continue.

The EFCC said the trio would be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of investigations.
