The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Thursday, March 5th, announced the arrest of a 24-year-old trader, Iziga Jude Ikechukwu, popularly known as Easy-money, for naira mutilation in Enugu state.

The palm kernel dealer was apprehended by officials of the commission’s Enugu zonal directorate after a video circulated on social media showing him spraying and mishandling naira notes inside a hotel room while celebrating his birthday.

The offence contravenes section 21 of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) act 2007, which criminalises currency mutilation.

According to the anti-graft agency, the arrest followed actionable intelligence derived from the viral video, prompting a preliminary investigation to determine the identity and whereabouts of the individual involved.

Investigators traced Ikechukwu to his residence near Timber market in Enugu-Ezike, where he was arrested on February 28.

During the operation, EFCC operatives recovered the sum of ₦81,700, believed to be part of the money mishandled in the video.

The commission said Ikechukwu will be charged to court once investigations are concluded.
