Residents of Maitama, a prestigious area in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja today Wednesday, January 24, raised concerns about an explosion in the vicinity with reports suggesting that it originated from a nearby dump site.
According to an eyewitness account on X (Twitter), the incident occurred during the disposal of waste, resulting in injuries to two individuals.
An X user, A Y Rafindadi, recounted the event, stating that a truck collecting trash from the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) dump triggered the explosion.
He reported that two men sustained injuries, emphasizing the proximity of the incident.
Another X user, King Ray, offered an alternative explanation, suggesting that the explosion originated from a burning dump site.
He speculated that gas cylinders in the refuse might have triggered the explosion, ruling out the possibility of a bomb.
Similarly, Serah Ibrahim proposed the theory of gas leakage, linking it to the explosion. She mentioned that the incident caused injuries to several people and occurred close to a refuse dump site.
However, Abiodun Sanusi contradicted the reports of an explosion, attributing the loud noise to an eruption from a heated metallic waste bin exposed to sunlight.
According to him, the police’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team responded to the situation, finding no significant threat.
As of the time of writing, the police had not issued an official statement regarding the incident in Maitama.
