At least four have died and 21 others are severely injured after an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) detonated along the Katarko-Goniri road located in the Gujba Local Government Area (LGA) of Yobe state.
Security expert, Zagazola Makama confirmed that the incident occured on Friday, June 27.
Makama noted that the victims were traveling to the popular Buniyadi market when their vehicle struck the suspected explosive.
He noted that the bodies of the four deceased have been taken home for burial, while the injured are receiving treatment at a specialist hospital and the Yobe State University Teaching Hospital in Damaturu, the state’s capital.
Also a male eyewitness who chose to remain anonymous, stated that on Thursday, June 26 vigilantes and military vehicles had also run over a buried IED along the same route, resulting in multiple casualties.
However, the military and the Yobe state police command has not released an official statement regarding the incident.
Meanwhile, relatives of the victims are urging the Yobe State Government to urgently repair the deteriorating road in order to prevent further attacks.
They also warned that the lives of local residents and military personnel based in Goniri are at serious risk.
