A pre-dawn fire on Tuesday razed the popular Ebunlomo Hotel and Resort in Ilorin, Kwara State, before firefighters subdued the blaze.
According to the Kwara State Fire Service, the flames were halted just before reaching the facility’s 23-room accommodation block.
The early-morning fire consumed the hotel’s bar area and a nearby store, prompting an emergency response from the state fire service.
In a statement, the agency’s spokesperson, Hassan Adekunle, said firefighters arrived promptly and implemented a coordinated strategy that prevented the blaze from spreading further.
Adekunle added that initial findings showed that the incident was triggered by a power surge, which ignited the bar and store sections.
He noted that the rapid intervention of the operatives averted what could have been a massive loss of property.
The Director of the service, Prince Falade John, urged hotel operators and residents to prioritise electrical safety.
“We advise that all commercial or residential properties should be equipped with surge protectors and functional circuit breakers,” he said.
John further stressed the importance of routine checks, saying, “Routine electrical maintenance is essential. Early detection and proper safety practices remain the most effective ways to prevent devastating fires.”
He assured that the service remains committed to protecting lives and property across Kwara State.
