Chairman of the Seyi Makinde-backed faction of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Kabiru Turaki, on Tuesday called on President Bola Tinubu to rein in the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, after a violent confrontation at the PDP national secretariat in Abuja.
Turaki claimed that more than 50 teargas canisters were fired at his group before they eventually took control of the secretariat.
The clash occurred just hours before the Wike-led faction announced the expulsion of several prominent party figures, including Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde; Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed; Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal; and former Deputy National Chairman (South), Chief Bode George.
Also expelled were the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Senator Adolphus Wabara; the newly sworn-in National Chairman, Tanimu Turaki (SAN); and the newly sworn-in Deputy National Chairman (South), Taofeek Arapaja, among others.
In a communiqué issued after an emergency meeting of its National Executive Committee, NEC, the Wike faction accused the affected leaders of anti-party activities and persistent sabotage. It also dissolved the party’s executives in Oyo, Lagos, Bauchi, Ekiti, Zamfara and Yobe States.
The faction said caretaker committees would soon be announced to restore order and reposition the party amid the deepening leadership crisis.
