The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) is set to prosecute TikTok streamer Habeeb Hamzat, popularly known as Peller, over reckless driving following a road crash that occurred on Sunday, December 14.
The crash occurred while he was driving and using his phone to livestream.
The corps marshal of the FRSC, Shehu Mohammed, in a statement issued on Monday, urged the actors’ guilds, entertainment associations, influencer networks, and content creator communities to caution their members against reckless road use.
He stated that fame does not place anyone above traffic laws.
Mohammed noted that activities such as live streaming, recording, or creating content while driving are unlawful and highly dangerous, and violate established traffic regulations.
He said such conduct endangers not only the driver but also other road users and undermines national efforts to reduce road crashes and fatalities.
According to him, public roads are governed by laws meant to preserve lives and must not be treated as studios or stages for online content.
In response to the incident, Mohammed directed the Lagos state sector commander to immediately commence the necessary processes to prosecute Peller for reckless driving, use of a phone while driving, and distracted driving, in line with existing traffic laws.
Mohammed also appealed to entertainment industry bodies, influencer networks, and content creator associations to promote responsible behaviour among their members.
He stressed that celebrities wield significant influence, particularly among young Nigerians, and should serve as ambassadors of road safety rather than symbols of recklessness.
He warned that the FRSC would apply the full weight of the law against anyone found engaging in distracted or reckless driving, regardless of social status or popularity.
“No social media content, online trend, or momentary clout is worth a human life,” he said.
Mohammed further urged members of the public to report dangerous driving behaviours and support collective efforts to make Nigerian roads safer.
The FRSC reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring safer highways across the country and stressed that road safety remains a shared responsibility requiring discipline, restraint, and respect for the law by all road users.
