Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has attributed his recent defection to the All Progressives Congress, APC, to what he described as the Peoples Democratic Party’s inability to shield him during the political turmoil in the state.
He said the APC, on the other hand, provided the backing he needed at a critical moment.
Fubara’s departure from the PDP, along with his key supporters, was officially confirmed on Tuesday during a stakeholders’ meeting at the Government House in Port Harcourt. The announcement followed his closed-door consultation with President Bola Tinubu at the State House in Abuja the previous day.
The governor stated, “I went to see Mr. President not just for a personal visit, but for a consultation on state matters.
“The most important outcome of that meeting is that we now have full support to leave where we were because we didn’t get the protection we needed. The struggles we faced were due to the crisis in the state.”
He further noted the impact of the President’s intervention, saying, “If President Tinubu had not intervened, there wouldn’t be a Siminalayi Fubara today. We have the people and supporters with us. Our decision is to move to the APC and fully support the President’s second-term bid.”
Fubara’s move marks a significant political shift in Rivers State and is expected to reshape alignments and strategies ahead of the 2027 general elections.
