The Good Governance Team, GGT, Nigeria has joined the global community in observing the 2025 International Anti-Corruption Day.
Every year on December 9, the United Nations designates the day to highlight the devastating effects of corruption and emphasize the need for stronger, collective action. It is also an opportunity to reaffirm the commitment to transparent, accountable, and inclusive institutions that serve the public interest.
“As we mark this day, GGTNIGERIA calls on government institutions to strengthen anti-corruption mechanisms, enforce laws without bias, and ensure openness in public service,” said Tunde Salman, Convener of GGTNigeria.
“Effective systems, clear processes, and swift sanctions build public confidence and reduce opportunities for abuse.”
The theme for 2025, “Uniting with Youth Against Corruption: Shaping Tomorrow’s Integrity,” underscores the critical role young people play in the fight against corruption. With more than half of the world’s population under 30, youth are central to shaping a fair, just, and transparent future.
Their energy, creativity, and innovative ideas make them indispensable partners in building societies guided by integrity. Young people are not only tomorrow’s leaders—they are active citizens today, and their contributions are essential for meaningful reform.
Corruption continues to pose a major challenge worldwide. It hinders development, weakens institutions, fuels inequality, fosters bad governance, and discourages investment. It also undermines the quality of public services and erodes citizens’ trust in government.
Corruption further drives voter apathy, as citizens lose confidence in systems meant to safeguard their rights. Its impact is felt across all sectors, from education and healthcare to infrastructure, security, and social welfare.
In Nigeria and globally, young people bear the direct consequences of corruption, making their involvement in anti-corruption initiatives not just relevant but necessary.
GGTNIGERIA has called on civil society and media organizations to raise awareness, encourage public dialogue, monitor government actions, and promote a culture of accountability.
“Their role in exposing wrongdoing and amplifying citizens’ demands is essential,” the organization said.
The group also emphasized the importance of communities, schools, and families in instilling values of honesty, responsibility, and ethical behavior. Building integrity begins at home and is strengthened through supportive communities and education.
Young people are urged to speak out, demand fairness, and embrace integrity.
“Young people should use their voices, skills, and platforms to discourage corrupt practices and inspire others to do the same,” the statement said.
The private sector is also called upon to maintain high ethical standards, strengthen compliance systems, and create avenues for youth engagement.
“Businesses thrive in environments where fairness and transparency are respected, and young people can contribute to building such environments through innovation and responsible leadership.”
