In the face of persistent insurgency and security challenges nationwide, the Nigerian Armed Forces have witnessed the early retirement of more than 500 senior officers, including Major Generals, Brigadier Generals, Rear Admirals, and Air Vice Marshals, following successive changes in military leadership under the administrations of Muhammadu Buhari and Bola Tinubu.
These widespread retirements, which occurred across the Army, Navy, and Air Force between 2015 and 2023, are rooted in a long-standing military convention requiring the disengagement of senior officers who are either of the same course or senior to newly appointed service chiefs.
According to military authorities, the practice is intended to preserve discipline, hierarchy, and operational order within the armed services.
Over the past eight years, at least 500 high-ranking officers have left the military, though insiders suggest that the true number of those affected could exceed 900.
The first major wave of retirements came in July 2015 after then-President Muhammadu Buhari appointed new service chiefs: Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai as Chief of Army Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar as Chief of Air Staff, and Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas as Chief of Naval Staff. This move led to the retirement of over 100 senior Army officers, primarily Major Generals and Brigadier Generals, along with more than 20 senior naval officers, including Commodores and at least one Rear Admiral.
A second round occurred in 2021 when Buhari once again overhauled the military leadership, naming Air Marshal Isiaka Amao (Air Force), the late Lt.-Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru (Army), and Vice Admiral Awwal Gambo (Navy) as the new service chiefs. This reshuffle resulted in the departure of roughly 123 Army generals, more than 50 senior Air Force officers, and around 50 naval officers.
Another wave followed in May 2021 after the death of Gen. Attahiru, when Gen. Farouk Yahaya, junior to several serving generals, was appointed Chief of Army Staff. His elevation prompted the voluntary retirement of over 20 generals from Courses 35 and 36.
The trend persisted under President Bola Tinubu. Just two weeks after taking office, on June 19, 2023, Tinubu announced new service chiefs, sparking another round of forced retirements. The appointments of the late Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, and Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla as heads of their respective branches led to the early exit of 51 Army generals, 49 Air Force officers, and 17 senior naval personnel.
Most recently, last Friday, President Tinubu carried out a fresh shake-up in the military hierarchy. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede succeeded Gen. Christopher Musa as Chief of Defence Staff, CDS; Maj.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu became Chief of Army Staff, COAS; Air Vice Marshal Sunday Aneke took over as Chief of Air Staff, CAS; and Rear Admiral Idi Abbas assumed the position of Chief of Naval Staff, CNS. The Chief of Defence Intelligence, Maj.-Gen. Emmanuel Undiendeye, retained his post.
If tradition continues, the latest restructuring is expected to result in the disengagement of about 60 additional senior officers from active service.
