One soldier has been killed and another injured after troops of the Nigerian Army’s 34 Artillery Brigade were ambushed by suspected gunmen in Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area of Imo State on Tuesday while responding to a security alert.
The attack occurred around 12:53 p.m. on May 4 along the SPDC–Etekuru road, where the troops had gone to assess a burnt Hilux vehicle before coming under heavy gunfire.
Security sources said the soldiers were attacked immediately on arrival, leading to a fierce exchange with the gunmen.
During the ambush, one soldier was killed in action, while another sustained injuries.
The attackers reportedly escaped with two AK-47 rifles and also damaged a military vehicle.
Reinforcements were later deployed to the area, forcing the gunmen to retreat.
Further checks at the scene led to the discovery of two burnt vehicles and two bodies, which were evacuated to a morgue for investigation.
Security operatives are currently combing the area as efforts continue to track down those responsible for the attack.
