Israel’s defence minister, Israel Katz, on Thursday, March 26, announced that Israel had killed Iranian naval commander Alireza Tangsiri in an overnight strike.
Tangsiri, who headed the naval arm of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), was responsible for overseeing operations in the Donald Trump, including efforts linked to its blockade.
Katz said Tangsiri played a direct role in the effective closure of the strategic waterway, adding that he had been eliminated in the strike.
Meanwhile, the United States (U.S) president, Donald Trump, claimed that Iran had been militarily obliterated and that its negotiators were seeking a deal.
Iran, however, denied that any talks with the U.S were taking place.
On Wednesday, an Iranian official outlined five conditions for ending the conflict, following reports that Tehran had received a 15-point proposal from the U.S.
Hostilities continued across the region, with ongoing attacks reported in Iran and Lebanon.
In Abu Dhabi, two people were killed by debris from an intercepted missile believed to have originated from Iran.
Israel’s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, described the killing of Tangsiri as further evidence of cooperation between Israel and the U.S in the ongoing conflict.
In a video message delivered in Hebrew, Netanyahu said Israel would continue to forcefully strike targets across Iran.
He echoed earlier remarks by Katz, stating that Tangsiri had played a leading role in the disruption of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
“This man had a great deal of blood on his hands,” Netanyahu said.
“This is yet another example of the cooperation between us and our friend, the United States, toward the common goal of achieving the objectives of the war.”
