Kebbi state governor, Nasir Idris, has accused security operatives of ignoring credible intel provided by the Department of State Services (DSS) before the terrorist attack on Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School (GGCSS), Maga.
The attack resulted in the abduction of 25 students and death of the vice principal while trying to protect the students during the attack.
Governor Idris, who visited the school at about 6:45 p.m. on Monday, said the state received actionable intelligence from the DSS indicating that the school faced imminent danger.
He said the security advisory triggered an emergency security council meeting, where officials agreed to provide continuous protection for the students.
According to the governor, the attack mirrored the December 2020 abduction of students in Kankara, Katsina state, which also occurred after security agencies allegedly failed to utilize available intelligence.
Idris expressed disappointment that security personnel deployed to protect the school had left their duty post shortly before the incident, despite spending the previous night with students and conducting emergency drills.
“This is clear sabotage. We got credible intelligence from the DSS that this school was likely to be attacked.
“DSS further advised that we convene an emergency security council meeting which we did.
“The decision was that we would provide round-the-clock protection for the students.
“Unfortunately, the officers abandoned their post 30 minutes before the terrorists arrived,” Idris said.
Governor Idris announced the creation of a special investigation panel to determine why the attack succeeded despite prior intelligence and security deployment.
The committee, led by the state director of the DSS, will also coordinate efforts to rescue the abducted students.
