The Labour Party, LP, has declared that its presidential ticket for the 2027 election will be reserved for candidates from southern Nigeria, ruling out any northern aspirant.
This position was disclosed in Abuja on Tuesday by the party’s acting national chairperson, Nenadi Usman, who made it clear that the decision is final.
“We have one certain decision that we have taken, and that is that we will certainly not field any aspirant from northern Nigeria.
“We have zoned the position to southern Nigeria. So if any northerner comes now to want to contest elections, we certainly will not accept that,” she said.
In line with preparations for the 2027 elections, the party’s national executive council, NEC, has scheduled its presidential primary for May 23.
Primaries for governorship, Senate, House of Representatives, and state assembly seats will hold earlier on May 15.
Details of the timetable were announced by the senior special adviser on social media to the interim national chairman, Ken Asogwa, in a statement issued in Abuja.
According to Asogwa, the schedule forms part of the party’s broader electoral roadmap and was approved during a statutory NEC meeting monitored by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.
He further stated that, in compliance with electoral regulations, the party will submit its membership register to INEC by April 15.
Additionally, the NEC endorsed the steps already taken by the party leadership regarding internal congresses, with ward, local government, and state congresses slated for March 26, March 28, and March 31, respectively.
The party is also set to hold its national convention on April 11 as it continues to build momentum toward the 2027 general elections.
