The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, on Thursday, paid a visit to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Dr. George Akume, in Abuja to appeal to the Federal Government for urgent intervention in the ecological problems affecting several communities in Ibadan.
In a statement issued by his media aide, Adeola Oloko, Oba Ladoja acknowledged previous interventions by the Federal Government and the World Bank in the Ogunpa channelisation programme.
However, he noted that the ecological issues around Ogunpa have attracted more attention because they affect elite areas, including Mokola, Ekotedo, Ogunpa, Oke Ado, and Molete.
He urged the Federal Government to extend similar assistance to other parts of the city, particularly communities such as Oranyan, Kudeti, Agbongbon, and other neglected areas, where residents continue to suffer severe flooding during the rainy season.
Oba Ladoja said the plight of these communities has largely been overlooked, not because the problem is less severe, but because the affected areas are not in the spotlight.
“What the numerous people along this route encounter during the rainy season is better imagined than told,” he said.
Responding, Dr. Akume commended the monarch for travelling from Ibadan to Abuja to draw the Federal Government’s attention to the hardship faced by his people. He said the Olubadan’s dedication to his subjects has earned him widespread affection.
The SGF assured that the Federal Government would take necessary steps to assist in addressing the ecological challenges.
Oba Ladoja was accompanied by Senator Fatai Buhari representing Oyo North in the Senate and Senator Sharafadeen Alli of Oyo South, among others.
