The Lagos State Government has announced the indefinite suspension of operations on its Red Line Mass Transit Train Service (LRMT).
The decision follows a mechanical failure that occurred during the train’s morning schedule on Monday, December 2.
The incident disrupted the train’s operations, causing significant inconvenience to commuters.
Later that day, the operators of the Red Line communicated via a newly created LRMT WhatsApp channel that the disruption would initially affect only the morning schedule, assuring commuters that services would resume in the afternoon.
However, this plan was later abandoned as the suspension was extended indefinitely.
The government has yet to provide a detailed timeline for resolving the mechanical issues or resuming operations, leaving passengers seeking alternative means of transportation.
An update was shared on the LRMT WhatsApp channel, which was later deleted by the operator on Friday, December 6.
“Please note that only the 5:20pm and 6:50pm train from Oyingbo and 6:40pm train from Agbado will run today,” the operator stated.
On the evening of Tuesday, December 3, the operator acknowledged in a message that it could not fulfill its earlier promise to resume operations as stated in the initial announcement.
“We sincerely apologise for the cancellation of service this evening, which was due to mechanical faults. Kindly note that the train will not be operating tomorrow, and until further notice. We deeply regret this situation, ” the message read.
The Red Line began its commercial operations on October 15, following an eight-month wait after its commissioning by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on February 29.
Initially, the service offered two trips during the morning peak hours and two during the evening peak, totaling four shuttles each day.
Operating on the first phase of the 27km route, the Red Line is managed by First Metro, under the oversight of the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA).
