Libyan authorities have deported 80 Nigerian migrants held in various detention centers across the country as part of ongoing efforts to curb irregular migration and reduce overcrowding in holding facilities.
The repatriation exercise was coordinated by the Department for Combating Illegal Migration (DCIM) in collaboration with the Nigerian consulate in Tripoli, and carried out through Mitiga international airport, Libya on Wednesday, November 12.
According to Migrant rescue watch, an organization monitoring migrant welfare and human rights in Libya, the deportation followed directives from the Libyan judicial police.
In a statement posted on X, the group said, “On the orders of the Public prosecutor’s office, the Judicial Police transferred a group of undocumented Nigerian female migrants to DCIM custody in Tripoli. All were served with judicial deportation orders and are awaiting deportation.”
The organization added that the latest batch included migrants previously transferred under similar judicial orders.
The deportations come amid renewed efforts by Libyan authorities, in partnership with diplomatic missions, to regulate the presence of undocumented migrants and address concerns over overcrowding and human rights conditions in detention facilities.
