A late-night gas explosion in the Bioku-Alaadun community of Ibadan, located in the Ona Ara Local Government Area of Oyo State, left multiple people feared dead on Friday.

The blast, it was gathered, occurred when a gas tanker was offloading its contents at a retail filling point, triggering a powerful explosion that caused immediate chaos in the densely populated neighbourhood.

Early reports indicated that the fatalities included the gas shop owner along with several other residents who were close to the site during the incident. Emergency responders rushed to the area as fire and thick smoke spread rapidly after the explosion.

Confirming the development, the General Manager of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency, Yemi Akinyinka, said operatives were already on the scene working to bring the situation under control. He noted that while casualties had been recorded, comprehensive information was still being collated.

Akinyinka stated: “Our men are there; they are still working. Yes, the incident happened. They were discharging gas, and there was an explosion. Information on the casualties is still being gathered.”
