A Nigerian woman identify as Damilola Matuluko was killed after being struck by a metro bus in downtown Houston, United States on the morning of Friday, May 31.
The incident occurred near the intersection of Rusk and Smith streets in the early hours of the morning, and it has been determined that the bus driver was at fault for the accident.
Damilola, who was employed by the city, was crossing the street at the intersection and had the right of way when the accident took place.
Investigations revealed that the traffic light had turned green for pedestrians, and as the bus made a turn onto Rusk Street, it fatally struck Damilola.
Witnesses at the scene recounted the shocking moment when the bus collided with Damilola, who was described as a diligent and well respected city worker.
The investigation indicated that the bus driver failed to yield to pedestrians who had the right of way, leading to the tragic outcome.
It was said the bus was operated by First Transit.
Police said the contract driver was cooperating with investigators. It was said that two passengers were on the bus, but no other injuries were reported.
Officials have identified Damilola, who had been working with the city’s HR Operations Employee Relations team since 2023.
“Although Damilola had only been with the HR Department for a short time, she had become a beloved and impactful team member. She will be sincerely missed by her colleagues in the City of Houston.” stated Jane Cheeks, the HR Director for the City of Houston, in a statement.
