The Nigerian navy under Operation Delta Sentinel (OPDS), on Thursday, March 26, dismantled an illegal refining site in Allison community, Bonny local government area of Rivers state, where 20,000 litres of stolen crude oil were recovered.
Following intelligence reports, an anti-crude oil theft team from the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Bonny under the eastern naval command was deployed to the area.
On arrival, the team uncovered an active illegal refining site made up of dugout pits, locally fabricated cooking and cooling systems, and sacks containing large quantities of stolen crude oil.
A further search of the site revealed over 20,000 litres of crude oil stored within the illegal structure.
The navy subsequently dismantled the facility, handled the equipment, and recovered products in line with established operational procedures.
The perpetrators, however, fled the scene upon sighting the approaching naval patrol team.
According to the Nigerian navy, the operation aligns with the directive of the chief of the naval staff, Idi Abbas, to intensify intelligence-led operations to protect national oil infrastructure and support the federal government’s target of 2.5 million barrels per day.
