Joseph Adenuga, the British-Nigerian rapper popularly known as Skepta, has spoken out about the deep level of injustice in Nigeria, saying the country needs help.
The 43-year-old grime MC in a viral video reflected on a phone memory from the #EndSARS protests.
The image, he said, reminded him that many Nigerians continue to endure pain, hardship, and injustice, years after the protests took place.
“I just had a memory on my phone, the EndSARS protest and it just got me thinking and I was like there is still so much injustice in Nigeria,” he said.
The #EndSARS movement, which swept across Nigeria in 2020, remains one of the largest youth-led uprisings in the country’s recent history. Young Nigerians took to the streets to demand an end to police brutality and systemic bad governance.
The rapper added that he would continue using his voice, music, and platform to speak against injustice at every opportunity.
“Whenever I come, whether it is at my show, verbally, imagery, whatever we can do, we are going to speak up for injustice at all times,” he said.
Skepta said he also observed that Nigerians are often among the first to speak up when other nations face crises.
He listed several countries and argued that Nigerians deserve the same support and global attention in return.
“Nigerians, we are like that as people, whether it is Congo, Sudan, Gaza, Lebanon, Iran and Cuba,” he said.
“But please help us Nigerians, we need help too, we need people to speak up for us as well.”
He ended his message with an appeal to the international community to pay attention to what Nigerians are enduring.
“This is my message to the people, please we need help too, help Nigeria speak up.”
Skepta’s comments come amid the country’s worsening insecurity, particularly the recent abduction of students and the beheading of a teacher in Oyo state.
