Nigeria on Monday, February 9, signed an agreement with Equatorial Guinea to deploy subsea fibre-optic infrastructure.
The development was announced by Olusegun Dada, special assistant to the president on social media, in a post on X social media platform.
According to Dada, the agreement is designed to enhance broadband access, strengthen digital communication systems, and deepen cybersecurity collaboration within the region.
“Nigeria has signed a deal with Equatorial Guinea to provide subsea fibre-optic infrastructure aimed at boosting broadband, digital communications, and cybersecurity cooperation across the region,” he posted.
Speaking during the signing ceremony in Equatorial Guinea, Yusuf Tuggar, minister of foreign affairs, explained that the subsea fibre-optic cable agreement is intended to increase broadband capacity, improve digital communications, and promote regional cybersecurity cooperation.
He added, “Well, this is building on the visit of president Bola Ahmed Tinubu to Guinea to visit his brother.
“And you will remember he was here in August of 2024 where several agreements were signed. And this is reaping the benefits of signing an agreement.
“The cable that is to be constructed is fiber optic cable broadband. So she’s bringing digital communication.
“It’s a subsea cable, very important, the linkages that we require in Africa to integrate our markets and reap those benefits.”
Tuggar added that the initiative underscores Nigeria’s commitment to deepening regional integration, advancing African-driven digital solutions, and boosting investor confidence through projects that improve connectivity, resilience, and shared economic growth.
He further disclosed that the agreement in principle was executed by Backbone Connectivity Network Nigeria Ltd (BNC), represented by Ibrahim Dikko, and Honorato Evita Oma, Equatorial Guinea’s minister of transport, telecommunications and artificial intelligence systems.
The signing took place under the supervision of Gaudencio Mohaba, Equatorial Guinea’s first deputy prime minister and minister for trade, business promotion and industry.
