The Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) has unveiled a comprehensive digital e-visa system along with an automated landing and exit card platform as part of sweeping reforms in its 2025 Visa Policy.
Akinsola Akinlabi, spokesperson of the NIS confirmed this on Friday, May 2 stating that the new initiative is a joint effort between the NIS and the Federal Ministry of Interior.
Akinlabi stated that the updated system aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and officially took effect on Thursday, May 1.
The fully online e-visa application platform is designed to improve national security, simplify the visa process, and phase out the existing visa-on-arrival practice.
He said, “The new e-visa platform introduces 13 categories under the Short Visit Visa (SVV) class.
“The full details are available on the official portal: https://evisa.immigration.gov.ng.”
Akinlabi noted that applications will be processed within 48 hours or less, with approved applicants receiving their e-visas and Quick Response (QR) codes directly via email.
He also confirmed that the Visa on Arrival policy will end on Thursday, May 1, 2025 with visas already issued under the policy remaining valid until Friday, May 30.
Akinlabi clarified that e-visas are not extendable and advised travelers to select visa types that correspond accurately with the length and purpose of their visit.
Adding that, “The new policy also introduces strict overstay penalties, effective September 1, 2025, and a daily fine of $15 will apply for all overstays.
“Foreigners who overstay for three months and above will incur a $15/day fine and a five-year entry ban.
“Also, those who overstay for one year and above will face the same fine plus permanent blacklisting from entering Nigeria.
He further stated that the new exit card system is integrated with the Visa Processing Centre (VPC), enabling automatic enforcement measures such as visa bans for violations.
Akinlabi also mentioned that a grace period from Thursday, May 1 to Wednesday, August 1 has been provided to allow for a smooth transition.
“During this period, foreigners currently residing in Nigeria with expired visas may return to their home countries without incurring any penalties.
“We urge all stakeholders to comply with the revised immigration policies and timelines.
“The Nigeria Immigration Service remains committed to implementing a more efficient, transparent, and secure immigration system that aligns with global best practices,” he concluded.
