Students of the Federal University of Technology Akure, Ondo State, took to the streets on Friday, February 9 staging a protest against the frequent robbery attacks targeting them off-campus.
The demonstrators, chanting solidarity songs, blocked the bustling Akure-Ilesa Road, causing a significant traffic jam on the expressway.
The students expressed their concerns, emphasizing the need for urgent intervention from the university management, government authorities, and security agencies to address the escalating security challenges posed by bandits.
Mrs. Funmilayo Odunlami, the state Police Public Relations Officer, assured the public that police personnel have been deployed to the area to prevent the protest from being exploited by criminals.
Recall that Micheal Okpara University of Agriculture in Umudike, Abia State, on Tuesday, February 6 halted academic activities and increased security measures following student protests against a rise in school fees.
Students were observed leaving the campus amidst heightened security, disrupting ongoing first-semester exams.
The vice-chancellor, while responding to clashes between students and security forces, issued a circular on behalf of the Senate, announcing an indefinite closure due to safety concerns, citing property damage and student injuries during the protests.
The university administration released a statement claiming “miscreants took over the University, damaging property and vehicles”.
