Governor Alex Otti of Abia state has declared that all first-class graduates from three recent convocation sets of Abia state university, Uturu, will automatically receive scholarships to pursue Master’s and PhD programmes at any Nigerian university.
The announcement was made on Friday during the combined 30th–34th convocation ceremony of the institution.
Governor Otti also instructed the state’s head of service to identify immediate gaps in the state civil service, which will be filled by 100 outstanding graduates from the three sets.
In a further bid to support young innovators, he approved N200 million to assist up to 100 graduates with innovative business ideas and enterprise initiatives, enabling them to launch and expand their ventures.
The governor additionally unveiled the restoration of stable electricity to the university with the commissioning of a 5MVA power substation.
He noted that a larger independent power project is underway, designed to distribute electricity across the campus via multiple sub-transformers, ensuring the entire university receives power once national grid supply is available.
Governor Otti further disclosed that the state has signed a contract for a more robust, independent power solution that will serve ABSU, Uturu, and neighbouring communities, boosting socio-economic activities in the region.
Highlighting his administration’s focus on practical governance, he said: “We thank God for the opportunity to be here and to solve problems. The essence of government is to solve problems, not to create problems.”
The governor emphasized that these projects will enhance students’ living conditions, strengthen the learning environment, and foster higher academic achievement.
In his remarks, the Vice Chancellor, Prof Ndukwe Okeudo, praised the Otti administration for its timely interventions, noting that the initiatives would alleviate accommodation challenges and build institutional capacity, setting the stage for sustained development at the university.
