The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has officially commenced its national convention at the Lekan Salami Stadium in Adamasingba, Ibadan, Oyo State, drawing delegates and party leaders from across the country.
The event marks a critical phase in the party’s preparation ahead of upcoming elections, with over 3,000 delegates accredited for the voting exercise.
While several key figures have confirmed their attendance, some prominent members of the opposition party, including governors Ademola Adeleke (Osun), Siminalayi Fubara (Rivers), and Agbu Kefas (Taraba), have yet to arrive at the venue.
Present at the convention are Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State, Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State, Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State, and the PDP acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum.
Other notable attendees include Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro, former Osun State Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola, former Gombe State Governor Senator Ibrahim Dankwambo, Board of Trustees Chairman Senator Adolphus Wabara, and party chieftain Bode George.
The convention also featured a ceremonial flag presentation. Damagum received the PDP flag, Fintiri, who chairs the national convention, received the convention flag, while Bala Mohammed, as Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, received the Nigerian flag. Host Governor Makinde received the Oyo State flag, with Moro and Fred Agbedi receiving the Senate and House of Representatives flags, respectively.
The city of Ibadan had been abuzz since Friday, November 14, as party faithful from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory arrived ahead of the convention. On the eve of the event, Governor Makinde hosted a dinner attended by PDP governors, former governors, the BoT chairman, and members of the National Working Committee.
The accreditation process, which started in the afternoon, serves as the preliminary step for the party’s voting exercise and sets the stage for the convention’s key deliberations.
