The Ogun state police command on Thursday, January 22, arrested eight armed robbers across different locations in the state.
The syndicate specialized in hijacking commercial trucks and terrorizing motorists along Papalanto-Ilaro and Owode-Idiroko axis of the state.
The command’s spokesperson, Oluseyi Babaseyi, said the crackdown followed a directive from the commissioner of police, Lanre Ogunlowo, directing the anti-robbery squad of the state criminal investigation department at Eleweran, Abeokuta, to track and dismantle the network.
Through sustained intelligence gathering and covert monitoring, the police identified members of the syndicate and tracked their movements across different parts of the state, leading to the arrest of eight armed robbers at separate locations.
Those arrested were identified as Mogaji Sodiq, also known as Ogbons, Adebowale Lekan, Ajah Peter, Ganiyu Razaq, Odeleye Ayoola, Egboja Amos, Bello Akeem, and Olaifa Sunday.
A hijacked truck, 900 bags of cement, and a locally made single-barrelled pistol were recovered during the operation.
Investigations revealed that the group had conveyed the stolen truck before offloading most of the cement at a warehouse, which was traced and recovered by operatives.
Preliminary findings also suggest that the group had been involved in previous attacks targeting commercial supply chains, particularly heavy-duty trucks transporting goods across the state.
The command said efforts are ongoing to track other members of the syndicate who are currently at large, while investigations continue to uncover accomplices and logistics networks linked to the group.
Ogunlowo reaffirmed the command’s commitment to intelligence-led policing and assured residents that operations against organized crime would be sustained to ensure the safety of lives and property.
He urged residents to report suspicious activities through official police emergency channels.
