The Oyo State Police Command has intercepted a truck conveying materials suspected to be explosive devices after an intelligence-driven stop-and-search operation in Saki town.
The interception followed actionable intelligence received by security operatives, leading to the monitoring and eventual stopping of the vehicle within the town.
Confirming the development in a statement on Sunday, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Ayanlade Olayinka, said the suspected materials were secured immediately and the truck taken under police control pending further investigation.
“Upon being briefed on the development, the Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, Femi Haruna, ordered a comprehensive investigation into the incident.
“Consequently, specialised personnel of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal, EOD, Unit and the Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear, CBRN, Unit were deployed to safely secure the items for safekeeping and forensic examination,” the police said.
According to the command, a detailed forensic process is already underway to establish the exact composition of the materials and determine their intended purpose.
Police authorities also confirmed that the driver of the truck has been arrested and is cooperating with investigators as inquiries continue.
The Commissioner of Police commended the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, for his leadership and support in strengthening proactive, intelligence-driven policing nationwide.
The command assured residents that there was no immediate threat to public safety and urged them to remain calm.
“The Nigeria Police Force remains fully committed to the protection of lives and property. Members of the public are therefore urged to remain calm, as there is no cause for panic,” the statement added.
It also noted that updates would be provided as investigations progress.
