Senator Ned Munir Nwoko has expressed concerns during a Senate session regarding the increasing insecurity in Delta State, attributed to growing tensions with suspected herdsmen.
This is coming shortly after his remarks a few weeks back, the Delta State police disclosed the disappearance of at least 20 officers.
During the plenary session, Senator Ned Nwoko voiced his concerns as reports emerged that the officers were purportedly ambushed by suspected Fulani herdsmen in Agadama Community, situated in the Ughelli North Local Government Area.
The officers were reportedly conducting a rescue mission for abducted individuals within a forest at Bentsiga Buplesi Community, located in the Ugheli area.
He said, “Insecurity pervades every corner. Hailing from Delta North, I can attest that in every forest, on every farm in Delta, herdsmen are a constant presence. They roam freely, instilling fear and perpetrating violence against our farmers.
“The agricultural landscape in Delta is marred by their activities. Mr. President, in Delta, we are farmers. Despite the presence of oil, it has not brought substantial benefits as our environment suffers from degradation due to pollution.
“Farming areas that are not degraded cannot be farmed because of problems from herdsmen, so, we need security – our farmers need security to be able to farm. We have to ask state Governors to make an effort to this regard. I agree with you, everything cannot be left to the Federal Government – the State must also form and fund vigilantes in every community.”
Recent updates confirm the police report, which substantiates Senator Ned earlier statements on the Senate floor, regarding the ambush of policemen by suspected herdsmen.
As the situation unfolds, 15 officers remain unaccounted for, while authorities continue to recover bodies from the surrounding bush.
