Vice President Kashim Shettima on Thursday departed Abuja for Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to stand in for President Bola Tinubu at the 2026 African Union, AU, Summit.
The high-level gathering, themed “Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063,” is expected to drive discussions on strengthening water resource management, expanding access to safe sanitation, and accelerating the continent’s long-term development blueprint under Agenda 2063.
According to a statement issued by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications, Stanley Nkwocha, Shettima will participate in key sessions alongside other African leaders during the 39th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of AU Heads of State and Government and the 30th General Assembly, slated for February 14 and 15, 2026.
Beyond the main proceedings, the Vice President is scheduled to attend strategic side meetings and engage in bilateral talks with political and business figures.
The engagements are aimed at deepening Nigeria’s diplomatic relations, boosting economic cooperation, and reinforcing strategic alliances within Africa.
Shettima is accompanied by several cabinet members and top government functionaries for the summit.
He is expected back in Nigeria after completing his official assignments in the Ethiopian capital.
