The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has issued a security advisory to its employees, advising them to be careful and stay indoors after work hours if possible.
The security alert is dated July 27, 2022, and titled, “Urgent Security advisory,” Peoples Gazette reports.
“Intelligence reports warn of plans by undesirable elements to infiltrate various parts of the country, particularly state capitals, including the Federal Capital Territory, with the view to perpetrate crimes such as abductions and kidnappings for ransom, or as means of getting recruits for terrorist activities,” the notice stated.
The alert follows multiple security breaches around Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory. Last night, Nigerian soldiers and armed bandits engaged in gunfire near Abuja.
Witnesses said that the armed insurgents were on an eastern advance into Abuja when Nigerian soldiers intercepted them at joint security forces barricades close to Zuma Rock.
This attack comes three days after about a dozen soldiers were killed by bandits in Bwari, another suburb of the Nigerian capital. Three elite officers of the Presidential Guards Brigade were confirmed dead after sustaining life-threatening injuries from an ambush by Boko Haram terrorists on Sunday.
In the meantime, amid security threats against the FCT unity institutions, the Federal Ministry of Education ordered the closure of all Federal Government Colleges (FGCs) in Abuja on Monday.
Since Boko Haram fighters broke into the Kuje prison, an Abuja suburb, and released over 600 hardened inmates, including 64 terrorists, security tensions in the FCT have risen.
Among those who escaped was Khalid Al-Barnawi, the man responsible for the 2011 attack of the UN building in Abuja and a prized asset of the criminal group.
