President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has canceled his scheduled trip to the G20 leaders’ summit in South Africa and has delegated vice president Kashim Shettima to attend and represent Nigeria at the meeting.
This was disclosed on Friday, November 21, by Stanley Nkwocha, senior special assistant to the president on media and communications in the office of the vice president.
Nkwocha explained that, following president Tinubu’s decision to remain in Nigeria to address security concerns, he delegated the vice president to represent the country at the summit.
The decision comes after president Tinubu postponed his earlier scheduled trip to Johannesburg to await further security briefings regarding recent incidents in Kebbi and Kwara states.
He added that Shettima has already departed Abuja for South Africa.
The statement noted, “President Cyril Ramaphosa, the South African leader and current president of the G20 group, had invited his Nigerian counterpart to participate in this year’s edition.”
The summit, scheduled for Saturday, November 22, to Sunday, November 23, at the Johannesburg expo centre, will bring together leaders from the world’s top 20 economies, including representatives from the European Union (EU), African Union, and international financial institutions.
President Tinubu had been preparing to travel when Nigeria experienced a heightened security situation, prompting his decision to stay and focus on domestic issues.
