President Bola Tinubu is set to address world leaders at the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Wednesday, September 24, in New York, United States.
The session opened on Tuesday, September 9, with the high-level general debate scheduled to begin on Tuesday, September 23.
This year’s theme, ‘Better together: 80 years and more for peace, development And human rights,’ highlights the UN’s ongoing commitment to global cooperation.
Tinubu will join 195 world leaders, including 98 heads of state, five vice presidents, 44 heads of government, four deputy prime ministers, 37 ministers, one crown prince, and four chairs of delegation.
According to a revised provisional list obtained at UNGA headquarters, he is slated to speak during the afternoon session on September 24, making him the 17th leader to address the debate on day 2.
However, his slot could change if he does not attend in person.
At the UNGA general debate, leaders are expected to outline their national priorities and perspectives on complex global challenges.
Several high-level meetings are also planned during the session.
A one-hour event will mark the UN’s 80th anniversary, where officials and leaders will reflect on eight decades of achievements and discuss ways to strengthen a more inclusive and responsive multilateral system.
On Monday, September 22, France and Saudi Arabia will co-chair a high-level conference on Palestine, focusing on advancing the two-state solution.
On Thursday, September 25, heads of state and government will convene to develop strategies for preventing and controlling noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) such as cardiovascular illnesses, cancers, diabetes, and chronic respiratory conditions, while promoting mental health and wellbeing.
The discussions aim to produce a bold political declaration with a vision extending to 2030 and beyond.
On Friday, September 26, a high-level meeting will commemorate the international day for the total elimination of nuclear weapons and advance related initiatives.
