A multiple-vehicle collision on Friday, January 23, claimed the life of a trailer driver at Otedola bridge inward secretariat, along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.
The crash involved two heavy-duty trailers, one carrying sand and the other loaded with granite, competing for the right of way.
The collision trapped the driver of the sand-laden trailer, who sustained fatal injuries, while the driver of the granite-laden trailer survived without injuries.
Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) operatives responded swiftly to rescue the trapped victim, coordinating with Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) personnel to transfer him to Ikeja General Hospital for medical attention, where he was later pronounced dead.
Approximately 50 metres from the main crash site, a third trailer carrying flour overturned, worsening traffic congestion along the expressway.
Security operatives from Alausa police division were deployed to secure the scene, manage crowd control, and assist with rescue operations.
Special adviser to the governor on transportation, Sola Giwa, described the crashes as deeply regrettable and largely preventable, attributing the incidents to driver impatience and indiscipline.
He urged strict adherence to traffic laws and mutual courtesy among motorists to prevent further loss of life.
Giwa extended condolences to the family of the deceased driver and commended LASTMA, LASAMBUS, and security personnel for their prompt and professional handling of the emergency.
The Lagos state government reiterated its commitment to road safety and emphasized the need for heavy-duty vehicle operators to exercise restraint and professionalism.
