Troops on Thursday, July 2, repelled an attempted terrorist attack on a Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Bukuyyum Local Government Area of Zamfara State, forcing the attackers to flee after a fierce gun battle.
The incident was disclosed by Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency and security analyst covering the Lake Chad region.
The attack occurred at about 2:45 p.m. when suspected terrorists attempted to infiltrate the Forward Operating Base at Gwashi.
Troops responded with superior firepower, engaging the attackers in a fierce exchange of gunfire and forcing them to abandon the assault and retreat from the area.
Reinforcement troops from the Forward Operating Bases in Gummi and Bukuyyum were subsequently deployed to strengthen the position and support ongoing clearance operations.
The Nigerian army have since intensified surveillance and area domination patrols while reinforcing defensive positions to prevent the terrorists from regrouping or launching further attacks.
No casualties were recorded among the troops during the encounter.
Military sources described the swift response as evidence of the troops’ operational readiness and determination to deny terrorist groups freedom of movement across the area.
Makama added that troops have continued aggressive patrols and intelligence-led operations to track down the fleeing attackers and sustain pressure on criminal elements operating in the state.
