Troops of the Multi-national Joint Task Force (MNJTF) have successfully thwarted a planned improvised explosive device (IED) attack following the arrest of a 28-year-old man identified as Murktar Alhaji-Chari for transporting materials intended for IED production in Gubio Local Government Area (LGA), Borno State.
The spokesperson of the MNJTF, Olaniyi Osoba, revealed that this operation occured on Thursday, January 2.
He noted that the troops, operating in Sector 3 within the Monguno community in Borno, worked alongside the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF).
Osoba also stated that the seized materials included four empty 12kg cylinders, one empty 6kg cylinder, two carburettor gas canisters, two pressure regulators and a hose.
He revealed that the suspect admitted to carrying the materials to Damasak town in Mobbar LGA, Borno, for a planned assault on MNJTF troops.
Osoba said, “Intelligence reports suggest that the materials were intended for a terrorist group planning a retaliatory attack after suffering recent losses.
“These include the elimination of several members and the seizure of a significant weapons cache.”
He explained that the swift interception prevented the planned attack and diminished the operational capability of the terrorist group.
The MNJTF spokesperson stated that the suspect is now in custody and is cooperating with the investigation.
He also stated that MNJTF Force Commander, Ibrahim Ali, praised the troops and the CJTF for their alertness and professionalism.
Osoba finally emphasized the MNJTF’s ongoing commitment to fighting terrorism and safeguarding the region’s security.
