A fresh disagreement over ownership of land has erupted between two communities in Abaomege and Ishinkwo, located in Onicha local government area of Ebonyi state.
A source, while confirming the incident on Tuesday, June 6, claimed that two persons lost their lives in the clash.
He also said that the victims were returning from a fishing adventure when they were shot dead.
The source added that residents of the two communities were thrown into confusion following the disagreement, as commercial activities in Abaomege were brought into an abrupt end.
He stated that, “What we saw here today (Tuesday) was unexpected.
“Though the land dispute between Abaomege and Ishinkwo communities has been there.
“Two people were killed by the communal warriors this morning and a policeman was also shot but he didn’t die.
“People are running helter-skelter with shops in the popular Abaomege area shut since morning.
“There is fear everywhere and the villages are in a panic situation,” he added.
The Ebonyi State police public relations officer, SP Onome Onovwakpoyeya, while speaking on the development, said that the two victims were confirmed dead at the hospital.
The police spokesperson also revealed that the injured policeman was receiving treatment in an undisclosed medical facility.
SP Onovwakpoyeya also said that, “Three persons, including a policeman, who was returning home after the close of work, were shot at the Abaomege-Oshinkwo communal crisis area by the Oshinkwo warriors.
“The victims were rushed to the hospital. Two of the victims (civilians) were confirmed dead, but the policeman is responding to treatment.
“An intensive manhunt is on for the fleeing suspects.”
