At least nine people have been killed and two dozen others wounded on Sunday, June 5 after shootings in three cities in the United States.
The shootings on Saturday night and Sunday morning were the most recent incidents of gun violence, leaving lawmakers scurrying to address the problem.
According to The Reuters, an argument between two men in Philadelphia on Saturday night evolved into a firefight that fired bullets into a popular bar and restaurant sector, killing three people, wounding 12, and causing panic as many rushed to leave.
Police report shows that a shooting occurred at a club in Chattanooga, Tennessee, after midnight, killing three people and injuring 14.
Three individuals were killed and two others were injured in a shooting in Saginaw, Michigan, early Sunday, according to WEYI television, citing a police statement.
Unlike the other two cases, which included onlookers who were unrelated to the shooting, all five people engaged in the Michigan shooting were, according to authorities, participating in the incident.
As of Sunday evening, no suspects in any of the shootings had been apprehended.
Communities in three other cities are still reeling from massacres that claimed the lives of ten people at a grocery store in Buffalo, New York; 21 people at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas; and four people at a medical building in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Officials were stunned by the brazenness of the Philadelphia shooting. “It’s horrifying, despicable, and pointless,” Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney said, while Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw said, “We’re profoundly horrified.”
Police suspect two guys got into an argument and started firing at each other, killing one of them. When a police officer saw the other gunman shooting into the crowd, he opened fire.
The gunman dropped his gun after being struck by the officer, but he managed to flee through the crowd.
The fatalities were between the ages of 22 and 34, while the injured were between the ages of 17 and 69.
Multiple gunmen killed three people and injured 14 others in Chattanooga, according to authorities. Two died from gunshot wounds, while a third died after being hit by a car while escaping.
Chief Celeste Murphy of the Chattanooga Police Department requested the public’s assistance, asking any witnesses to call a tip line.
In Saginaw, Michigan, police were summoned to a location where two men were pronounced dead and one lady was taken to the hospital, where she died from her injuries.
Two more males were taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds.
According to the Gun Violence Archive, a nonprofit research organization, there have been at least 240 mass shootings in the United States so far this year.
A mass shooting is defined as an incident in which at least four persons are shot, excluding the gunman.
To combat the run of mass shootings, US President Joe Biden has called on Congress to prohibit assault weapons, expand background checks, and implement other gun control measures.
On Sunday, he reiterated his support for semi-automatic firearm limitations.
“If we can’t outlaw assault weapons as we should, at the very least, we should raise the age to buy assault guns to 21,” he tweeted.
