The Nigeria police force has clarified that Omoyele Sowore’s arrest was carried out to ensure fairness in the ongoing prosecution of protesters involved in the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow demonstration in Abuja.
Police public relations officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, explained on Thursday that Sowore was detained for allegedly leading protesters into a restricted area during the demonstration.
According to him, it would be unjust for the police to prosecute only the protesters while leaving out the person believed to have led the action.
“If we proceed to charge some people to court and leave the person who led them into that act their leader, the elite protester who took them into the restricted area that would not be fair,” Hundeyin said.
He assured that Sowore would not be held longer than the law allows, adding that the activist was expected to be arraigned before the end of the day.
“Like the others, he will not spend more than necessary time with us. Once we conclude the charges, he will be prosecuted. In fact, our plan is to ensure that he goes to court today,” Hundeyin stated.
Sowore was arrested at the federal high court in Abuja shortly after attending Thursday’s proceedings in solidarity with Nnamdi Kanu.
