The political tension in Rivers state escalated on Thursday, January 8, as lawmakers in the state house of assembly initiated impeachment proceedings against governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Oduh.
The plenary session was overseen by Martins Amaewhule, speaker of the Rivers state house of assembly.
Major Jack, majority leader of the house, formally presented the notice detailing allegations of gross misconduct leveled against Fubara.
A total of 26 lawmakers appended their signatures to the notice, which they claimed constituted violations of the Nigerian constitution.
Amaewhule disclosed that the notice of allegations would be formally served on Fubara within the next seven days.
Linda Stewart, deputy majority leader, subsequently read out the notice of allegations and gross misconduct against Oduh.
Thursday’s proceedings highlight renewed hostilities between Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
On December 5, a group of Rivers assembly lawmakers led by the Speaker announced their defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Days later, Fubara formalized his own switch from the PDP to the APC.
However, tensions and veiled remarks between Wike and Fubara, which culminated in the declaration of emergency rule in the state in March 2025, have persisted.
Most Rivers lawmakers have remained loyal to Wike.
