The Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Ibok-Ete Ibas, has finally appeared before the House of Representatives Ad-Hoc Committee on Rivers State Oversight, following earlier summons.
The Street Journal earlier reported how the Sole Administrator failed to appear before the Ad-Hoc Committee despite being scheduled for an interactive session.
During his appearance at the National Assembly on Friday, Ibas requested additional time to prepare a more comprehensive report on the situation in the state. He cited the prevailing fragile political climate and security challenges, which have been compounded by the declaration of a state of emergency, as factors limiting immediate access to detailed information.
In his remarks, Ibas acknowledged the leadership of the committee and commended its commitment to safeguarding democratic principles through legislative oversight.
“Mr. Chairman, please permit me to begin by respectfully acknowledging your leadership and the critical role of this committee in safeguarding the democratic and constitutional integrity of our great nation,” he said.
The Rivers State Administrator expressed his regret for missing earlier engagements with the committee, clarifying that his absence was not intended as a sign of disregard. He explained that pressing matters of governance and the urgent demands of managing the state’s affairs had prevented his timely attendance.
“I deeply regret my inability to attend earlier engagements with this esteemed committee. Today is exactly 10 days after the first invitation, and in between we’ve had four days that were off calendar as public holidays plus the weekends inclusive,” he noted.
He highlighted the immense challenges of administering the state under the constraints of emergency rule and reaffirmed his deep respect for the National Assembly’s constitutional role in providing oversight and ensuring accountability.
“The absence, of course, was not out of disregard, but rather due to the weighty and urgent demands of stabilising governance in a state under a declared emergency,” Ibas added.
The Sole Administrator noted that although Rivers State is currently stable, the situation remains delicate and requires careful management. He urged the committee to grant him additional time to prepare a thorough and detailed report, seeking their understanding and patience in light of the circumstances.
“It is important that any engagement with this committee is done with the depth, accuracy and clarity it rightfully deserves,” he stressed.
Ibas reiterated his dedication to collaborating with the committee and extended his heartfelt gratitude to both the lawmakers and the media for their support and engagement.
“I remain fully committed to cooperating with the committee and to ensuring that all relevant information is made available in due course. I want to specially thank Mr. Chairman and the distinguished honourable members of this committee. I also want to thank members of the press for the role they’ve played in supporting the efforts of the federal government,” he said.
The committee is set to review the administrator’s request and will soon announce its decision on the next steps for overseeing Rivers State’s transitional governance.
